“Hey Sullie, is Jace in the office or is he out on a call?”
“It’s great to hear your voice, and you sound pretty healthy too Percy. Jace is here, sitting in the bullpen eating lunch – I’ll put you through to him. Take care of yourself; we want you back as soon as you can be here.”
“Thanks Sullie, I want to be back yesterday, but Doc says I have another six weeks of rehab. But make no doubt about it, I will be back.” And he clicked me over to hold. Jesus, was this the music people had to listen to when I put them on hold too? This was horrible. No wait, is there something worse than horrible? Yes there is, because this was surely it. This music made me think of a new way to interrogate perps, although I would probably be brought up on charges of cruel and unusual punishment… Yes, that is how bad this hold music was.
“Percy! Hey you, what’s going on? You’ve made my day, I was just thinking about you!”
“Hey Jace, I need to ask a favor of you.”
“Anything Percy, you know that.”
“When your shift is over, I need you to come by. I would like you to house sit the place in Pompano while MacKinley and I are in Ireland for the next month or so. I need to brief you on what’s going on. It’s of a personal nature to the three of us, I prefer not to talk about it on the phone… understand?”
“I do. It’ a family matter then? Well, I get out about four if nothing pops before then and I’m not on a call. I’ll be there as soon as I break away.”
“Thanks Jace – I’ll owe you yet another one. Beyond the transfusion that you gave me that is.”
“No Percy – you do not owe me for that, you would have done the same for me I’m sure. I’ll see you in a couple of hours then.”
“Thanks Jace – you’re the best.” And I hung up the phone before I was tormented with another round of the music of death.
I went into the kitchen, one of the after effects of the massive amounts of the antidotes I had been given was the fact that I always had cotton mouth. Apparently, the only thing that seemed to quench that for at least a few hours was blood. So I was drinking a ton of blood lately. Not that it was going to hurt me, but I felt too vampirey while I was doing it. It was just a creepy feeling to know that your life as you’d known it was turned around on the whim of a bunch of nut jobs who wanted to rule the world. But I digress.
I was having a lot of conversations in my head lately that I normally would have been having with my ghost, but I felt that was a normal byproduct of the fact that first, he wasn’t here anymore, and secondly, I had been so used to him being in my life for so long.
